But for a visit now and then? Oh, so very worth it. And everything on the menu, if consumed in excess, would probably eventually kill you. Everything on the menu is authentic Southern (soul) food. Everything on the menu is cooked from scratch. When you first walk in, the building is far from remarkable-it's quite shabby, with several booths devoted to piles of mail and other personal artifacts, and was probably last redecorated in the 1970s. I just can't say enough good things about Chandler's. Based on our experience, we don’t understand the former accolades. Other reviews mention a bad small and we also noticed that. However, we personally witnessed some things that made us uncomfortable from a food safety standpoint. The place is in disrepair and I was consumed with concern thinking about what their health score may be, which I could’t find. And we encourage you not to even have to change your mind about this place. And we learned a good lesson from that: if you feel you don’t want to do something, you can change your mind. I have never felt that from a restaurant before. When we walked in, I wanted to turn around and walk out. However, this is not your ordinary greasy spoon joint. I’m ok with a greasy spoon type of place. After reading some mixed reviews, I thought we’d. It was mentioned in Road Food as THE place to go and even mentioned the tables overflowing with papers, books, etc that other reviewers mentioned. We had Chandler’s on our list of places to eat in Knoxville.
